He didn’t compose for conventional ensembles. Cage’s composition Living Room Music composed in 1940 is a “quartet” for unspecified instruments, really non-melodic objects, which may be present in a front room of a typical home, hence the title. Music is an artwork kind whose medium is sound and silence, occurring in time. Common components of music are pitch (which governs melody and concord), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, metre, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.
